Health Insurance Portability: How to Switch Plans Without Losing Benefits

Health insurance portability is one of the most underutilized rights of Indian policyholders. Introduced by IRDA in 2011, portability allows you to switch from one health insurer to another — or from one plan to another within the same insurer — while retaining the waiting period credits already accumulated. This is a powerful consumer protection right that most policyholders do not exercise.

The most valuable benefit of portability is waiting period continuity. If you have completed 2 years of your 4-year pre-existing condition waiting period, porting to a new insurer means you only need 2 more years in the new plan — not starting from zero. This continuity applies to both pre-existing condition waiting periods and initial waiting periods.

The portability process must be initiated at least 45–60 days before your policy renewal date. This is the most common mistake — waiting too long. The insurer is required to respond within 15 days, and IRDA regulations mandate that the new insurer cannot reject a portability request without valid medical grounds.

When is porting appropriate? If you are consistently paying claim shortfalls due to room rent caps or sub-limits; if your current insurer has poor claim settlement ratios; if you have found a plan with better hospital networks in your area; or if a new plan offers significantly better features at comparable premiums. The key is not to port impulsively — evaluate the new plan as thoroughly as you evaluated your current one.

Potential risks of porting: you cannot reduce your current sum insured when porting (you can increase it, but fresh waiting periods apply to the increased portion); pre-existing conditions require re-declaration and the new insurer can impose modified terms; and some specific covers like maternity benefits may reset waiting periods under the new plan.

At Family Shield Insurance, we managed the porting process for Anjali Gokhale (Fergusson College professor featured in our testimonials) — moving her from a restrictive plan with room rent caps to a comprehensive plan with zero sub-limits. Her annual premium reduced by ₹4,200 while her coverage improved dramatically. Porting, done correctly, is a net win for the policyholder in almost every scenario.
