No Claim Bonus in Health Insurance: How to Grow Your Coverage Every Year

No Claim Bonus (NCB) is one of the most rewarding features in modern health insurance — and one of the least understood. In simple terms, NCB rewards you for not making a claim during a policy year by increasing your sum insured at no extra premium cost. Over multiple claim-free years, your coverage can grow by 50–100% of the original sum insured without paying a single rupee more.

How NCB works in practice: if you buy a ₹5 lakh health policy and do not make any claim in year 1, your sum insured automatically increases to ₹5.5 lakh (10% NCB) or ₹6 lakh (20% NCB) in year 2, at the same premium. Continue the claim-free streak, and after 5 years your coverage could be ₹7.5–10 lakhs — a 50–100% increase — without any additional premium payment.

NCB structures vary significantly between insurers. Some offer a simple fixed increase (10% per claim-free year up to 50%), while others offer accelerated structures (20% in year 1, 30% in year 2). Some plans cap the NCB at 100% of the original sum insured, while others have no cap. The best plans also protect your NCB — reducing it by only the claimed proportion rather than resetting to zero after any claim.

The strategic implication is important: your choice of whether to file a small claim should factor in the NCB impact. If filing a ₹20,000 claim causes you to lose ₹50,000 in NCB benefits over the next 2–3 years, paying out-of-pocket may be financially wiser. This is a nuanced calculation that your insurance advisor can help you make based on your specific plan terms.

NCB protection riders are available in some plans — they allow you to make one claim per year without losing your NCB accumulation. For families with young children prone to minor hospitalizations, this add-on can be worth the marginal additional premium.

The compounding effect of NCB over a decade is remarkable. A ₹5 lakh policy with 10% annual NCB, renewed consistently without claims, grows to ₹10 lakhs after 10 years at no additional cost. Combined with health inflation running at 15–20% annually in India, NCB-driven coverage growth partially offsets the erosion of real coverage over time.
